Advent Message, November 30, 2025

Our theme for this week is: Stay Alert and Keep Walking in God’s Light

Happy New Church Year! It is the first Sunday of Advent which means it is also the first Sunday of the new liturgical year. We turn a new leaf in our lectionary as we recommence the three year cycle. Our readings for the next fifty two weeks will be guided by Year A. It is also the time of year when we will light the candles in our advent wreath as we wait with hope, joy, love and peace for the coming of Christ.

In the reading from Isaiah the word to the people of Israel is a promise to bring salvation (deliverance). If the people are willing to trust God then they will be able to see the fulfillment of the promise. Israel should therefore walk in the light and the other nations would soon model them.

In the second reading the Romans are charged to exercise alertness and to awake from their sleep. This is necessary because Jesus had brought them salvation therefore they no longer needed to walk in darkness. The Romans are to live an honourable life by putting on the armour of light and to get rid of the works of darkness.

In the gospel reading Jesus also talks about the need to stay alert. The disciples are told that they should always be prepared for the return of Christ since no one except the Father knows when this will take place. They should not run the risk of being caught off guard like some were in Noah’s time. They are to make every effort to walk in God’s light as a sign of their commitment to staying ready.

We extend a warm welcome to all visitors, and those who are joining us online.
