Did you know? (Sunday, March 17, 2024)

Bishop Aubrey Spencer succeeded Bishop Lipscomb. Spencer served as Bishop from 1843 – 1872. He was the one who renovated St. Catherine Parish Church, turning it into the Anglican Cathedral. The East window here at the St. Andrew Parish Church is dedicated to Bishop Spencer. The window was installed during the renovation of the church in 1879-80. The middle three windows over the altar form a unit. At the bottom of the windows, it says, “To honour God and remember Aubrey Spencer, Bishop of this Diocese and former Bishop of Newfoundland (Canada), who has passed away.” The windows show scenes typical of Newfoundland, where he was the first bishop, like glaciers, and scenes from Jamaica, like palm trees. In the middle window is a picture of the Ascension.
