The Jewish rabbis counted 613 separate commandments in the Law of Moses, Of those, 365 of them (one for each day of the year) were stated negatively, and 248 positively. The first two of the Ten Commandments came directly from God, and 611 commandments were said to be given through Moses. Interestingly enough, the number 611 is the numerical value of the word Torah, which means “law,” “commandment,” or “instruction.”
