In his book “Christ and Culture,” Richard Niebuhr outlines three ways in which Christians have sought to live faithfully for Christ as they relate to the culture surrounding them. The first of these approaches is opposition to culture (Christ against culture). This approach is characterised by absolute loyalty to Christ and the church and entails a rejection of culture and society. The lines between the church and the world are sharp because the church is a community whose existence judges the world.
