The collect for Palm Sunday dates back to the second oldest liturgical book in the Christian West, the Gelasian Sacramentary (8th century). Archbishop Cranmer made some alterations to the collect in the 1549 Prayer Book. The collect is inspired by the Epistle assigned for the day, Phil 2:5-11. It weaves together the themes of God’s love, Christ’s incarnation and passion as well as our union with Christ.
