John the Baptist, who pointed the way to Jesus and baptized him, lived an ascetic life in the Judean wilderness near the Dead Sea. He survived on simple desert fare, eating whatever the desert provided. His dress was also rustic: He wore a tunic of camel’s hair with a leather belt.
