The temple, at which Jesus was presented in Jerusalem, was a magnificent building. Solomon had it built in about 960 B.C., but it was completely destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. The Persians allowed the Jews to rebuild it in 516 B.C. Around the time of Jesus, many additions were made to it by King Herod and others, but it was destroyed by the Romans a short time later, in 70 A.D. Today the Islamic Dome of the Rock stands where the Temple once stood.
