Did You Know? (Sunday, February 17, 2019)
Beatitudes is a word with Latin roots that means “blessings”. There are eight Beatitudes proclaimed by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. (Mt 5-7). Each is a proverb-like proclamation, without a narrative. Four of these blessings also appear in the shorter, Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 6), followed by four woes which mirror the blessings. They describe what it means to be a follower of Christ, gives standard of conduct, and contrast Kingdom values with worldly values. They also indicate what Christ’s followers can expect from the world and what God will give them.
