Mother’s Day has its origins in the Christian celebration of Mothering Sunday, observed on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The contemporary observation of Mother’s Day has its origins in America in the early 1900s. It celebrates the sacrifices mothers make for their children. It is not unusual for an important cause for women to be launched on Mother’s Day. In 1968, for example, Martin Luther King, Jr’s wife, Coretta Scott King, led a march in support for underprivileged women and children.
