Did You Know? (Sunday, February 28, 2021)
“A simple confession of faith in Christ [was] no longer sufficed for admission to baptism. Those who had initially heard the news about Jesus were Jews who were living according to the Mosaic law and who were awaiting a messiah, but now those who heard it were non-Jews of every sort of philosophical and religious persuasion, with a variety of personal and cultural backgrounds, from respectable and disreputable walks of life. If they were attracted by what they saw of the Christian way of life, they first had to find a member of the community who would sponsor them during a period of moral formation, and who would present them for baptism after about two or three years of preparation.”
