Did you know? (Sunday, October 12, 2025)
The oil of Unction (anointing) that Priest applies to the sick is first blessed by a Bishop. This takes place on Holy Thursday of each year. On this day, the clergy of each region meet with a Bishop for what is known as a “Chrism Mass.” During this service, the clergy renew their ordination vows, and the Bishop blesses the oils that are to be used throughout the year in the administration of the sacraments, as well as in various consecrations and blessings of persons and objects. The oils are:- OI, oil of the infirmed, for anointing the sick and shut in; OC, Oil of the Catechumen used at Baptism; OS, Oil of Sacred Chrism used at Ordination and Confirmation.
