The period from the Monday after Pentecost through to the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent is known as “Ordinary Time.” The first Sunday of this season is Trinity Sunday, and the last Sunday is Christ the King Sunday. For some, the period is referred to as “ordinary” because it speaks to that part of the liturgical year that is not included in the major seasons of the church calendar. For others, the word “ordinary” means numbered (think ordinal numbers), because the Sundays of the period are assigned a number. Most think of ordinary time in terms of the living out of Christian faith and the meaning of Christ’s resurrection in ordinary life. It may be referred to as the “green season,” because green is the usual liturgical colour for this period of the church year.
