My Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This
liturgical feast was instituted by the Bishop of Rome, Pope Pius XI in 1925. Initially, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in October which immediately precedes the Feast of All Saints. The feast is today celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. It now suggests to us that all our celebrations throughout the year takes us to the point where we proclaim Christ as King over our lives and over all creation.

The motto of Pius XI was "Christ's peace through Christ's reign". His rationale for instituting this feast was that "feasts have been successively instituted to answer needs or provide spiritual benefits under the circumstances of the times." During his time Pius XI felt that human-kind was being submerged by great evils. His reason was that "a great number of people….have banished Christ and his most holy law from their individual and familial lives and from public affairs. He then concluded , "We must look for the peace of Christ in the reign of Christ." (Days of our Lord, page 256).

What this actually means is, if we are to have the peace of Christ, we must subordinate ourselves to the rule of Christ. Why are we afraid and unwilling to do this? Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." May we be willing to love the Good Shepherd in the same way he loves us. Amen.

Come, O Christ, and reign among us,
King of love, and Prince of Peace;
Hush the storm of strife and passion,
Bid its cruel discords cease.
(A&M 207)

We extend a warm welcome to all our visitors. Special welcome to members of the St. Hilda's Alumnae who are worshipping with us at the 7:30 a.m. service.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Psalm 95:1-3

Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout
for joy to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with
thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
