The Collect for Second Sunday of Advent

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach
repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to
heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with
joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Prayers Of Intercession

Second Sunday of Advent

Leader: Good and gracious God, we give you thanks for all who have told us of your love and your presence among us. We give thanks for John the Baptist preparing the way for our Saviour. We give thanks for the Apostles and the Evangelists. Mighty God, guide and empower all preachers of the word and ministers of the sacraments. Bless all who proclaim your love and glory through the arts, music, broadcasting and publishing, all who prepare hearts and minds for your coming.
Blessed Lord, hear us
All: and set your people free.
Leader: Lord of freedom and grace, we pray for all held prisoner by tyranny and oppression, all whose eyes are blind to your glory and deaf to your word. We remember all who do not know or love you, all whose lives are darkened by fear.
Blessed Lord, hear us
All: and set your people free.
Leader: We give thanks for all who taught us the faith and led us to you, for all who have given us a glimpse of your glory. We pray for teachers of the faith and Sunday school teachers, for families, friends and all who are dear to us. We remember any who are having special difficulties or troubles at this time.
Blessed Lord, hear us
All: and set your people free.
Leader: Lord of love, we pray for all who are consumed with hatred, and resentment, all who do not know how to accept or receive forgiveness, all who are not at peace with themselves or the world. We remember all who are anxious and fearful at this time. We pray for all who are weakened by illness or incapacity, especially…...
Blessed Lord, hear us
All: and set your people free.
Leader: Lord of glory, you destroy the darkness of the shadow of death and open the kingdom heaven to your loved ones. We pray for the departed……… , that in your love they may rejoice in peace.
Blessed Lord, hear us
All:

and set your people free.

(Silence may be kept)

All:

Holy God, we look for you, we long for you.
Let us see that you come among us;
make us aware of your presence
and grant us a glimpse of glory;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Hymn: I Cannot Tell

(Londonderry Air - an Irish Melody)

All:
I cannot tell why He, whom angels worship Should set His
love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, He should seek
the wanderers To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that He was born of Mary When Bethlehem's
manger was His only home, and that He lived at Nazareth
and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come.

Ladies:
I cannot tell how silently He suffered as with His
peace He graced this place of tears, or how His heart upon the
cross was broken, The crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know, He heals the broken hearted and stays our
sin and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from
the heavy laden, for yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is here.

Men:
I cannot tell how He will win the nations, How He will
claim His earthly heritage, or satisfy the needs and aspiration
Of east and west, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory, and He shall
reap the harvest He has sown, and some glad day His sun will
shine in splendor when He the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known.

All:
I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at His
bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation
when all the hearts of men with love are filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and countless
voices then will join to sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer:
"At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!"

Hymn: We Will Glorify

(Twila Paris)

We will glorify the King of Kings, we will glorify the Lamb;
We will glorify the Lord of Lords, who is the great I Am.

Lord Jehovah reigns in majesty, we will bow before His throne;
We will worship Him in righteousness, we will worship Him alone.

He is Lord of heaven, Lord of earth, He is Lord of all who live;
He is Lord above the universe, all praise to Him we give.

Hallelujah to the King of Kings, hallelujah to the Lamb;
Hallelujah to the Lord of Lords, who is the great I Am.

(Repeat verses 1 and 2)

Order of the Lighting of the Advent Wreath

Processional Hymn

219

SEASONAL GREETINGS
PRESIDENT: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father And the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
PEOPLE: And also with you.
Second Candle - The Candle of Peace
Leader: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord
All: Thanks be to God
Leader: Today is the Second Sunday of Advent and we will light the Candle of Peace.

Last Sunday we lit the First Candle in our Advent Wreath, and celebrated the patriarchs, this First Candle reminded us of our hope in Christ.

Today we light the Second Candle of Advent, the Candle of Peace. We remember the prophets who spoke of the coming of Christ, of how a Saviour would be born, a King in the line of King David. The prophet Isaiah called Christ "the Prince of Peace". They told us how he would rule the world wisely and bless all the nations.

When Jesus came he taught people the importance of being peace-makers. He said that those who make peace shall be called the children of God. When Christ comes to us he brings us peace and he will bring everlasting peace when he comes again. We light the Candle of Peace to remind us that Jesus is the Prince of Peace and that through him Peace is found.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.

Refrain
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Second Candle, the Candle of Peace is lit

Leader: Peace is like a light shining in a dark place.
People: As we look at this candle we celebrate the peace we find in Jesus Christ.
Leader: Let us pray:
All: Lord Jesus, Light of the World, the prophets said you would bring peace and save your people from trouble. Give peace in our hearts at Christmastide. We ask that as we wait for you to come again, that you would remain present with us. Help us today, and everyday to worship you, to hear your word, and to do your will by sharing your peace with each other. We ask it in your name who was born in Bethlehem.
Amen.
THE KYRIE

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
